Advertising (spam) FAQ

What is advertising?

Spam (also known as advertisement) is a message sent to a user or chat room that is designed to promote a service, web site, chat room, or other product. These messages are sent without consent and are designed to attract users to the advertised service.

For example, the following messages could be considered spam:

  • <Guest66919> Please visit my web site. It will be fun! www.example.org
  • <spam49> COME TO MY ROOM AT #SPAMCHAT
  • <cart00ney1> Are you in debt? Private message me for help!!!

I'm just trying to get to a room!

It's not necessary to make a link to get to another room. To go to a room without making a link, type /join #roomname (of course, substitute the name of the room for roomname.)

Why doesn't liveHarmony allow advertising?

  • Advertising disrupts current room conversations.
  • The rooms are intended for chatting; using others' rooms to promote your own wares is not appropriate.
  • In most cases, chat room owners forbid it! They have worked hard to obtain a user base; it would not be fair to "steal" their attention.

But I want a successful room?

Advertising won't help you there. If you're looking to build a successful room, you might want to read our guide to creating a successful chat room.

How can I attract users?

  • Choose a descriptive name for your room. If your chat room is about video games, don't name it after your dog.
  • Build a web site. It will help build up your user base and show that you care. Many companies offer free web space. Use our code generator to add a chat portal to your page. Add biographies of yourself, your operators, and your users. Make a listing of basic rules and links to other sites. Schedule chat times so that your users can meet each other.
  • Choose a descriptive topic. It serves two purposes: it greets your visitors and provides a quick summary of what your room is about. Since it is displayed in the chat room listing, be sure to write it well and make your room's purpose clear.
  • Always be polite and fair to your visitors. If someone needs to be kicked, kick them, but be sure that there is a good reason. A pointless kick does not encourage them to return.
  • NEVER resort to advertising. It gives you and your room a bad name and users won't stay. Repeated advertising can also lead to room termination.
  • Choose your operators well. Be sure that you can trust them to be fair to users -- nothing turns users off like a power-hungry administrator. Never give out your chat room password for any reason.
  • Don't give up on it. It will take time for your room to get popular, but if you follow these tips, work hard, and stick around your room will be successful.
