Why advertising doesn't work

-- and how to make a room that does

For background information, including our definition of advertising, see the spam information page.

liveHarmony administrators deal with room advertising (spam) complaints daily. We've noticed a pattern:

  1. The room owner advertises his new room
  2. A few users join the new room
  3. The room owner (and operators) welcome the new users
  4. Invariably, the conversation dies quickly. After half an hour, most of the new users have left.
  5. The room is dead until the next advertisement.

Man can't live on bread alone; successful chat rooms can't live on advertisement alone. To have a popular chat room, you need more than the transient, temporary users that advertising provides. You need compelling content; you need a way to differentiate your rooms from all of the others out there. (Oh, and if you repeatedly advertise, liveHarmony will shut down your room anyway.)

So, how does one create a successful room? We have another document describing just that.
